The trial of Thai webmaster Chiranuch Premchaiporn, facing criminal charges as an intermediary under the Computer Crime Act (CCA), ended on Thursday, 16 February after hearings that went on and off stretching over a year. The verdict is now set for 30 April 2012.

The Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI), four non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and 13 individuals filed a judicial review of the State Intelligence Law at the Constitutional Court in Jakarta on 5 January, in protest of the law that is said to threaten freedom of the press and democracy in Indonesia.

Bangkok, Thailand – The Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA) today invites mid career journalists from Southeast Asia to apply for its 11^th annual Journalism Fellowship Programme.

The fellowship theme for the year, titled “Documenting threats to the rivers of Southeast Asia: Looking through the journalist’s lens”, is to focus on the management of rivers and the impact of climate change and development on water resources as well as the communities living along the rivers.

A newspaper publisher in General Santos City claimed he received a threatening text message on 17 January after calling for the arrest of the killers and masterminds in the murder of a fellow publisher, Chris Guarin, less than two weeks ago.

On 12 January 2012, a Thai journalist and political activist was shot dead in the morning rush hour in Thailand's provincial resort island of Phuket, local media reported.  Police are investigating the motive for his killing but have not ruled out the journalist's continued expose` on official corruption in the province's rampant beach land encroachment problem as a major cause.
